I couldn't walk. The pain was too much. Every time my foot touched the floor I felt a fresh wave of pain stream through my leg. Every time I picked my foot up from the floor, I felt it again.
The day before I was on my bicycle for a few hours. My brother, dad, and I were riding The Fast One, a 102km bicycle race through the streets of Johannesburg. I was straddling my bicycle while waiting at the starting line. I felt the most incredible pain I've ever felt. My brother, bumped into me and my Flanders frame hit my pubic bone with a bang. It was no fun at all, but I had no pain down there during the 4 or 5 hours in the saddle -it must have numbed me.
I had smothered my skin in SPF 50 sunscreen, but I obviously missed a spot. It was evident from the intense pain I felt on that Monday morning. My left calf was a deeper red than the colour of my hair.
3 Months later it still hadn't completely returned to its normal shade of freckly white. (My doctor had told me once that I must have had a 3rd degree burn.) My first time on my brand new 125cc scooter. I couldn't turn in time to miss the block of concrete in the middle of the parking lot. My brand new scooter didn't suffer a scratch. My shoelaces on my Sauconys, however, got frayed, and my left leg got abrasions, right where it got sunburned 3 months ago.
